At Katy Starr Photography, I focus on the quality of senior portrait sessions, not the quantity of them. I may not be the ideal photographer every senior and every senior may not be the ideal client for me. And that’s completely okay! This post is long overdue! I’ve really been wanting to share of few more of my favorite photos from our Starr family photo session last fall. Jessie Nelson, once again, took the reigns and produced beautiful images for us to cherish forever. She shot the photos and Katy Starr Photography did the edits! I’m so ecstatic about them since they are our first official family photos together and I couldn’t have asked for better. Thank you so much, Jessie; you are truly amazing in all that you do 🙂

I’ve only gotten a few printed so far, as you probably saw from my post last month. I have many more to print and can’t wait to get to it!

So, we’re into February… when is the last time you’ve had family photos done? Spring will be here before we know it, but if you like snow and winter, now would be a fantastic time to have some done. One suggestion I would make though, is to definitely plan ahead and here are a few tips:

Research a photographer – Whether it be Katy Starr Photography or not, it is so important that you like the photographer’s style and that they fit your budget. Check out their work and testimonials. Have your friends used them before? Ask them about their experience. A photo session should be much more than setting up a session, going through the motions and getting a “CD”. It should be a wonderful, lasting experience that you love every step of the way.
Budget for your session – Once you research a photographer (which, by the way, money shouldn’t be the number one priority – definitely should be considered, but not number one), find out what they charge and if you love their work and value what they do, set aside a certain amount of money each month to save for your session and prints. For anyone who spends $3-$5 a day on a coffee, you can easily save enough money in a few months for some quality photos. If good family photos are important to you, it can be done much easier than you think!
Plan in advance – In addition to planning in advance to save money, many photographers have a full schedule at least a month out, in addition to the required non-refundable deposit that is needed to hold your date. If you’re worried about weather, most photographers are more than willing be flexible in worst case scenarios, so that should be the least of your concerns. Besides, it’s nice to show your photographer some courtesy by planning ahead!
Family photos are about more than kids – When getting family photos done, make sure to get more than just a couple shots of you and your significant other. The children are adorable and you will certainly love those shots, but don’t forget about the importance of the two individuals who created your beautiful family and tie everyone together!

A couple of sets of our good friends (and sessions with KSP 🙂 ) and brother and sister-in-law are celebrating wedding anniversaries this month, another sister-in-law is celebrating her birthday this weekend and one of my best friends just had her first baby, a little boy! This is certainly an amazing month and definitely one of my favorites for sure.

These sessions are for families and kiddos and are available only twice a year in the fall and late spring/early summer. Maybe you’ve already done a family session this year, but would like the opportunity for a shorter session, some shots of the kiddos for Christmas and holiday cards… this is your chance! Here are a few things to take note about this year’s minis:

20 minute session

Tea with Cinderella – Southern Idaho Photographer

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to do something I’ve never done before in my photography business. I spent a Saturday morning with Cinderella and 13 other little princesses at a tea party at The Steeping Leaf in Twin Falls! Khloe Carter won our photoshoot with Cinderella, so she had a little one-on-on time with her and memories she’ll never forget 🙂

The Cinderella Tea Party, hosted by Clock Strikes 12 Productions, was sooo much fun! Every little detail was thought of and the setting was simply devine.

In addition to the great one-on-one time, Cinderella, shared some proper etiquette, princess lessons and story time. Sweet Confections made some wonderful little cupcakes for the princesses to snack on and creative balloon characters by Balloon Stories. Every little princess there had a ball (no pun intended!), having tea with Cinderella. Be on the lookout for the next Tea Party as there just may be another Princess to meet!

This blog post is a little bit about me. I met up with another local photographer, Jessie Nelson, who by the way is ah-mazing! She shot these photos for me, while I finished them up with a little editing. Her business is Rock Creek Photography by Jessie Nelson, so look her up 🙂

I’ve never been one to like photos of myself….. like ever. But here I am sharing a BUNCH of photos of myself. This isn’t to be conceited or full of myself, by any means. While I’ve never been completely comfortable in my own skin, having a baby really makes it worse when it comes to our natural drive to criticize ourselves. A constant reminder I have to give myself is, it took 9 months to gain this weight and I certainly can’t expect to drop it all right away. As long as I’m trying (trying to eat better and trying to exercise) that’s what is most important!

Yes, I now have the excuse that I just had a baby, but I can’t use that as an excuse forever. Why? Because I want my daughter to grow up feeling not good, but GREAT about herself. I need to be a good influence on her and how she cares for herself. She doesn’t need a magazine or the media to tell her she’s not good enough if she isn’t skinny. In all honesty, it could go both ways. Women are blasted for being too skinny, as well as being too fat. Neither matters and I want my daughter to know that. I want her to know that, first and foremost, she needs to just take care of herself and respect what God has given her.

Eat healthy, eat the right foods, but don’t deprive yourself. You only live once, right? So live a little once in awhile!
Exercise! Keep your body and your heart, healthy and in shape
Love yourself, no matter what!
Take pictures and LOTS of them… they are the best memories that not only we have, but that our family and friends have

I want her to know that she should do this for herself, for her family and for God. When Josie sees me working out, I don’t want her to view it as she HAS to do it to be “skinny,” but instead because she chooses to and it makes her feel good!

So now that I’ve gone off on quite a tangent, my purpose for this post. I could’ve edited these photos beyond belief. Given myself a glowing, golden (and even) tan and made myself skinny, but I didn’t, and I won’t for any of my clients. Other photographers will for a price, if you ask and that’s okay too if it fits their style, but I have chosen not to. Be proud in your own skin, if you aren’t, change it! You’re the only one in control. Don’t opt out of photos because of how you look. Too many times, I tend to do the same thing, but you know what I tell myself? As long as I work hard and do my best, I will get there. Thanks again Jessie for making me feel great about myself and getting me in front of the camera!
